Israeli Journalist Alon Pinkas Implicated in 'Qatargate' Bribery Scandal

As reported by JNS, the funds were traced back to Jay Footlik, a Washington-based lobbyist for Doha, and were funneled through an Israeli businessman, Gil Berger, between early 2024 and March 2025. This scandal, dubbed 'Qatargate' in the Israeli press, centers on allegations that Pinkas was paid to promote pro-Qatar talking points in his columns, particularly those aimed at framing Doha as an indispensable and 'positive' mediator in the Gaza hostage negotiations. JNS reports that the influence campaign sought to sideline Egypt and spread the narrative that Hamas leaders were based in Qatar at the explicit request of Israel and the U.S. Pinkas has reportedly acknowledged receiving the payments but denies that his editorial content was dictated by Doha, claiming the money was for 'consulting' related to the Hostages and Missing Families Forum. However, critics within the Israeli security establishment, as cited by JNS, argue that this arrangement allowed a foreign adversary to 'buy' the editorial pages of a major publication to manipulate public opinion during a time of war. The report highlights that Pinkas is the third Haaretz writer to be linked to this Qatari influence operation, suggesting a systemic attempt by Doha to infiltrate the Israeli media landscape. According to JNS, the Israel Police and Shin Bet are currently investigating the matter as part of a broader probe into how Qatari money may have corrupted the inner circle of the Prime Minister’s Office and the media.
